Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Comedic misfire from the mid-1970s in a futile attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck when Barbra Streisand teamed with Ryan O'Neal in What's Up, Doc? Here, Streisand plays a spoiled rich girl, the head of a bankrupt cosmetics company, who discovers she's lost everything--except her ownership of the contract of a washed-up boxer (O'Neal, known for his combative nature offscreen). So she tries to rally this dispirited pug into a comeback that will earn the kinds of purses that will put her back on her feet. Naturally, in the process romantic sparks are kindled. But despite a loud and energetic performance by Streisand, this Howard Zieff comedy doesn't add up to much. --Marshall Fine

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Slight and forgettable but watchable enough
The Main Event is a not particularly funny star vehicle reuniting Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal as a broke perfume mogul and the hopeless boxer who is her sole remaining asset. It's no What's Up, Doc?, but it's pleasant enough, coasting on the stars' likeability and offering just enough funny moments for you to feel you're not entirely wasting your time. However, the vintage making of documentary on the DVD (which includes a lengthy deleted scene) really gives away how much times have changed, ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - main event
I am a new fan and wanted to get all of Babs movie....it was funny...not as good as "whats up Doc " but enjoyable nonetheless.....enjoy!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Story Not As Good As "What's Up, Doc?", But Still Very Funny!

Hillary Kramer (Barbra) is a successful Perfume magnate, when she finds out that her accountant has robbed her blind and left for South America. Going through all of her remaining assets she finds a boxer, purchased as a tax write off. She decides to take Eddie Scanlon (Ryan O' Neal) who is much more at home giving driving lessons, into the ring and use him as her key to riches. Eddie thinks this will only get him killed, but Hillary won't give up that easy, nor will Eddie give up that easy ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simply Streisand
I have been a fan of Barbra Streisand it seems like forever. My aunt Dee Knuckles who had the only womans boxing team in San Pedro, CA. was the boxing consultant for Barbra in the Fabulously Funny "The Main Event". I can remember going with my aunt to see Barbra and Ryan at the Auditorium in LA, seems like just yesterday. The major highlight of this film is when Barbra sings "The Main Event" absolutely takes your breath away. This movie is fabulous. Way to go Barbra.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Much better than it's reputation
This film was a major hit upon release in the summer of `79. With a budget seven-million-dollars, the film took in over $40 million at the domestic box office and became one of the top-ten grossers of the year. Unfortunately, it has since been written off by many fans and critics alike as one of Streisand's weakest film efforts. As for myself, I believe THE MAIN EVENT manages to be likable, funny, and entertaining. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is ... Read More
